Govt. cracks down on jet skiers
Government announced it is to tighten up regulations concerning the craft.
Last night Transport Minister Erwin Adderley confirmed that a Cabinet Committee had reached its conclusions on the matter.
The Committee, after consulting with various water sport organisations and the Bermuda National Trust, has ruled that both private and rented jet skis should not be used during the hours of darkness.
And a stack of tough new measures, intended to make the use of rented jet skis much safer will also be implemented.
In future those renting out a jet ski, or personal water craft, will have to undergo some form of practical instruction before they can operate the craft.
They will also have to be supervised at all times by a guide, who must be provided with a faster vessel than the one being operated by the customer.
People who rent out jet skis will have to be at least 16-years-old and will have to wear a life jacket at all times. And rented jet skis will be banned from the waters of Harrington Sound, Clearwater Beach, Shelly Bay and the main chain of islands in Hamilton Harbour. They will also not be allowed to be operated in either St. George's or Hamilton Harbours at speeds in excess of five knots.
