`Hell bent' youth does penance in prison
has jailed a young man for dishonesty.
Adam Leroy King, who is not related to the Barbados-born Magistrate, pleaded guilty yesterday to receiving a stolen jacket worth $385.
Mr. King told King: "I can't overlook your record of dishonesty.
"You know how may years I have been trying to bring you around (when sentencing)?'' Mr. King asked.
"I thought you could be salvaged. You're youthful but you seem hell bent on a life of crime. I impose a sentence of six months. The public must be protected.'' Responding to King's comment that he did not know the jacket was stolen, Mr.
King said: "If people did not buy stolen property, the thieves would not be successful. They'd get caught.'' In April of last year, Mr. King had harsher words for King, saying he had treated him like a "son'' -- a story the Magistrate reminded the court of yesterday -- and jailed him for nine months then.
Crown counsel Oonagh Goodred told the court that Corvin Ratteray reported to Police on February 24 that his apartment had been broken into and a jacket stolen.
After receiving a tip, Police went to King's home on April 24 and during a search found the jacket, which was later identified by Mr. Ratteray.
First King told Police he bought it at Shannon's Boutique on Queen Street, then, when confronted with the lie, said he brought it off a man for $50.
King also pleaded guilty to obstructing a Police officer in the execution of his duty and violently resisting arrest.
He was arrested early yesterday morning after he bolted as Police entered the Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club.
Ms Goodred said an officer mistook King for the man they were looking for and gave chase.
The officer was pushed to the ground and it took several other Policemen to affect the arrest.
Mr. King added two concurrent 28 day sentences to the six month sentence relating to the jacket.
