Hospital food service resumes following dispute
Work in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) kitchen came to a halt yesterday morning after an argument between management and staff. However both sides were able to come to an agreement, allowing work to resume in the early afternoon.A person close to the matter, who asked to remain anonymous, said problems arose after staff were told to adopt new food service equipment last week.“Now for the ward aides, who deliver the food to patients, it is three times the workload with the same pay. They were told to sink or swim because this is the way it’s going,” the person said.“They never thought about the people who are doing the work or the flaws that the system would have if not done correctly.“If management work with us, we will work with them.”The disagreement reportedly ended by 12.30pm, with staff returning to work.A Bermuda Hospitals Board spokeswoman said: “Work in the KEMH kitchen was temporarily halted Monday morning while discussions took place with regards to some equipment maintenance.“Normal food services have resumed, and patient meals are being provided.”
