Hospitals board blast ZBM
about a ZBM News report based on an interview with an accident victim.
Mr. Hume Martin, the board's executive director, said he believed the television report aired on Wednesday night was unfair and violated a section of the Broadcasting Commissioners Act.
"The story did not incorporate the views of the hospital staff as to what happened,'' Mr. Martin said. "In that sense it wasn't balanced.'' He said the hospital was not seeking disciplinary action.
In the interview, Mr. Fitzgerald Richardson said he was roughed up by Police after a cycle accident, then left handcuffed at the hospital until his mother arrived, despite head injuries suffered in the crash.
At a news conference yesterday, Police Commissioner Mr. Lennett (Lennie) Edwards and Mr. Martin both described the report as "inaccurate and irresponsible.'' The man was so agitated that Police were needed to help get him in the ambulance, Mr. Martin said. The ambulance had to stop and call Police en route to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital because Mr. Richardson was kicking hospital staff and damaging the ambulance and its equipment, he said.
At the news conference, Ms Lisa Calhoun of ZBM defended her report and said attempts were made to get comments from the hospital.
Mr. Martin said he dealt with media queries and no calls were made to his office.
