Housing on people's minds at meeting
series of town hall meetings last night.
And the talk quickly turned to plans for the Baselands -- particularly housing.
Dr. Saul said when the land was turned over to the Bermuda Land Development Company (BLDC) to be managed, the plan was to recoup some of the $50 million dollars in revenue and 500 jobs that were lost when US and Canadian forces pulled out.
Because of this no areas were zoned for housing. Instead they were zoned for other uses including industry and recreation while others were put in a land bank.
He said old Bermuda stone buildings on the Base could be used either for housing or as a means to earn money or create jobs and what would happen to them was up to the BLDC.
Dr. Saul said the other type of homes were "prefabs'' which would have to be abandoned in the event of a hurricane warning. They also did not comply with the Island's building code. Some of their wiring would not be allowed in any Bermuda home, he said, adding that the "prefabs'' were due to go.
