IT teachers will be lured away: Union
that it's unlikely they will remain in the education system, says the secretary of the Bermuda Union of Teachers.
"The Ministry are going to have to come to grips with this,'' said Michael Charles. "XL are doing all the training. Once the teachers get this technology they will be in high demand in private industry.'' Several teachers took part in an Information Technology workshop conducted by XL Insurance this month and Mr. Charles pointed out that the calibre of instruction is bringing teachers to such a high standard that they will soon be sought after by the private sector.
Claiming the teaching profession needs to be made more attractive both in terms of pay and conditions of work, Mr. Charles noted the difficulty teachers had with the ministry while they were taking the workshop and he charged that they were given "the run around'' by the Education Ministry as to its use.
"Teachers didn't mind doing the workshop at all, but we tried to find out from the ministry if it was going to be included in the curriculum in September, or if it was personal development and upgrading for the teachers.'' he said.
"We were given the run around and it wasn't until just a few days before the workshop ended, that we finally received word that it will be taught in September.'' Describing the Ministry's treatment as aggravating, Mr. Charles predicted that the IT trained teachers "will leave teaching altogether for better prospects.'' "It is something the Ministry will have to face up to.'' he said.
