Jamaican woman ordered to forfeit $18,468
was ordered to forfeit the sum.
School teacher and mother of four, Mernell-Meritta Greenshaw-Lindner pleaded guilty this week in Magistrates' Court to the charge.
Crown Counsel Mr. Melvin Douglas told the court that on February 28 at 1 p.m.
at the Civil Air Terminal Lindner cleared customs and boarded a flight to the United States.
"At 1.10 p.m. Police boarded the plane and approached the defendant. Officers identified themselves and told her the purpose of a search,'' Mr. Douglas said.
"A female officer searched Lindner and found a large wad of money hidden in her underwear beneath a sanitary napkin.
"The money totaled $17,900, and $568 was found in her wallet.'' Mr. Douglas added that Lindner said she had not obtained permission from the Bermuda Monetary Authority to take the money off the Island.
She added that she had left Jamaica last Friday to meet with her estranged husband in Miami.
A man offered to pay her ticket and give her some money if she picked up money from a man in Bermuda.
Mr. Douglas said when she got to Bermuda she went to a popular night club in St. George's where she met with a man and picked up the money.
The man told her to hide the money in her underwear and to wear a purple hat so she could be identified by the third party who would take the money in Miami.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered that the sum of $18,468 to be forfeited to the Crown.
