Judge issues gag order on case
a child support case involving one of the Island's top surgeons.
On Wednesday The Royal Gazette printed claims made by the daughter of Dr.
Mohammed Hamza that her father was failing to make child maintenance payments, despite a 1995 court decision ordering him to do so.
And yesterday it was revealed that Dr. Hamza had been ordered to appear before a judge later in the day to explain why he was in arrears with the payments.
But Mr. Justice Meerabux, who was hearing the case yesterday, then issued an order against the paper banning the publication of any further proceedings.
"The publication of any information relating to procedings previously held in camera or presently part heard in camera before this court is hereby prohibited,'' the order read.
"Any publication of information relating to the said proceedings shall be considered a contempt of court and shall be dealt with in pursuant to section 14 of the Administration of Justice Contempt of Court Act 1979.'' CHILDREN CLD
