Jury hears of alleged cannabis smuggling in CD

smuggled more than 400 grams of cannabis, worth tens of thousands of dollars, inside a Compact Disc player.

Allan Robinson, of Deep Dale, has denied importing 413 grams of cannabis and possessing the cannabis, worth more than $40,000, with intent to supply on January 17 of this year.

Crown counsel Sandra Bacchus yesterday told the two-man, ten-woman jury that Robinson returned to Bermuda, via an American Airlines flight from New York, after a ten-day visit to the US. Customs officer Kenneth Simmons said he X-rayed a CD cassette radio player and discovered eight packages wrapped in carbon paper, which was supposed to prevent an X-ray machine from detecting drugs.

Customs officer Simmons said Robinson appeared calm and did not seem surprised that something turned up on the scanner.

"He said he didn't know what the items were and said he was not going to touch them,'' Customs officer Simmons said.

He said that Robinson told him that he paid $105 US for the CD player but did not have a receipt or a warranty for the item.

Under cross examination by Robinson's lawyer Elizabeth Christopher, Mr.

Simmons admitted that he found no evidence connecting her client to the plant material inside the box. The case continues today.
