Land donation adds to Trust's land base

The Bermuda National Trust has received a half-acre plot of land to add to their already existing 250 acres of donated property.

The gift came yesterday from Mr. Dudley Butterfield and his wife Deborah.

Located at Point Shares Lane in Fairylands, Pembroke, the property will join such areas as Spittal Pond, Paget Marsh and Warwick Pond as protected land by the Trust.

Trust president Henry Ming was on hand to receive the donation and called it "an act of kindness that will benefit the Island for years to come.'' "We are delighted to accept this property from the Butterfields,'' Mr. Ming said. "It is a most generous gift. Our mandate is to preserve Bermuda's heritage, natural and man-made. Any opportunity to retain open space for the community is welcomed.'' The property will be known as the Butterfield South Nature Reserve and is the second piece of land donated by the Butterfields.

In 1981 they gave just over an acre of woodland to the BNT.

And Mr. Butterfield said he and his wife bought the one-time garden and banana patch to save it from development.

"I hope the Trust will have the power in the years to come to make sure that this piece of land is never built upon,'' Mr. Butterfield said. "I would hate to see a silly little house built on this beautiful property.'' "We continue to look for opportunities to acquire open space wherever possible,'' Mr. Ming explained. "It is a fast-disappearing commodity in Bermuda.''
