Magazine impressed by Bermuda's `Inns'
10-page spread in this month's Caribbean Travel and Life magazine.
Assistant editor of the US publication, Ms Sharon Jaffe Dan, had nothing but praise for the five guest houses she chose to feature.
The "storybook architecture'' of the guest houses is "guaranteed to charm'' she writes in the article headed "Small Wonders.'' "The colourful cottages with thick stone walls appear like manifestations of some long-forgotten fairy tale, their whitewashed roofs tiered like layers on a gargantuan wedding cake ...,'' she writes.
"Indeed if it weren't for those indefatigable shorts, architecture could very well be Bermuda's claim to fame ...'' The Island's inns resemble British country Bed and Breakfasts, she says, "where a piece of action means afternoon tea (served on bone china) or a game of croquet on the lawn.'' But she warns: "The flavour is genteel not jet set. Dress is smart casual, not bikini buff.'' Rosedon, Granaway Guest House, the Oxford House, Royal Palms and Hillcrest Guest House, whose rates run from $65 to $206 and are each "at least a half a century old,'' are a "handful of Bermuda's best,'' she writes.
According to Ms Dan, "a bevy of southern belles would not be a tad out of place sipping limeade on Rosedon's wide verandah.''
