Troy Robert Harris, 23, of Crisson Avenue, appealed to Senior Magistrate, the Wor. Will Francis when he heard he would have to spend the next two weeks in custody.

Harris is being held until a social inquiry report is prepared and his sentence decided.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking and entering a Pembroke guest house where he stole $1,250 worth of property belonging to Jason Carey, who is working on the Island.

Prosecuting, Sgt. Rex Osborne said that a security guard had spotted someone in Mr. Carey's room while he was asleep in bed. The intruder had even turned on a light to help him find his way around.

The guard telephoned Carey who found that the sliding door was open and that his wallet containing $420 in cash, credit cards and traveller's cheques had been stolen along with a watch, a radio and $600 worth of clothing.

Harris was later arrested.

Sgt. Osborne said: "He said he had broken into the premises. He had used the cash for his own purposes, thrown the clothing away when he found it did not fit him and sold the radio on Court Street. None of the property was recovered.'' Sgt. Osborne read out Harris' record which included previous convictions for theft and breaking and entering.

Harris told the court: "Over the last couple of months I have been going through a lot. The girl who is my son's mother said she was going to foster him and all that.'' Defending, Miss Elizabeth Christopher said that Harris had been taking care of the baby although the mother was trying to put him up for adoption.

She asked for a social inquiry report into her client and said that he may need to learn "coping skills''.

Mr. Francis adjourned the case until November 27 for the report to be prepared, and remanded Harris in custody.

But he ignored Harris who pleaded: "I need to take care of my son.''
