Magistrate ignores mother's plea
a magistrate yesterday.
Shelton David Williams, 17, was fined $600 for driving while disqualified after being caught by Police on Monday of last week. He was also banned from driving all vehicles for a year.
The student, of Loyal Hill, Devonshire, pleaded guilty and was given until April 30 to pay.
But at yesterday's hearing at the Magistrates' Court, the teenager's mother told magistrate Archie Warner that she would be paying the fine and five weeks was not enough time for her to gather the cash.
She added: "My son is a student and does not have any money, so I will be paying the fine. Can I ask for more time to pay? "I paid last time and I'm paying again. He was only riding next to the house.
He was not on a main road.'' But Mr. Warner was not prepared to change his mind.
He said: "He was disqualified from riding and he did it again. You seem to be condoning his foolishness.
"I don't care who pays the fine, you or him will pay it. You can serve the time for him, if you wish.'' In his defence Williams had told the magistrate that he had been servicing the bike for a friend and needed to test ride it to ensure it was in order.
"That's the only reason why I did it,'' he said.
He had previously been banned last autumn from driving all vehicles for three years for speeding at 75kph.
