The single vehicle accident occurred just east of Coney Island shortly before 10 a.m., reported a Police spokeswoman.

Apparently the man was riding east and lost control as he attempted to negotiate a right-hand bend. He crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a wooden guardrail in the westbound carriageway.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery.
