Man found with heroin in pants, court hears
have a package of heroin in his pants, a Supreme Court jury has heard.
The seven-woman, five-man jury was empanelled yesterday in the importation trial of Floyd McCoy Hayward.
Hayward, 45, of Friswell's Hill, Pembroke, denies importing an unknown amount of heroin on a British Airways flight from London on April 9.
A second charge of importing heroin with intent to supply has been dropped after legal arguments before Puisne Judge Philip Storr.
The Crown's star witness, paediatrician Clare Holt, was a passenger on BA Flight 2233 when -- about an hour before landing -- a request came over the intercom for medical assistance.
"I was directed to a dark skinned gentleman lying on the floor of the airplane,'' she said while under examination by Crown counsel Patrick Doherty.
"The man was unconscious and appeared to have difficulty maintaining his airway. He had shallow breathing,'' she added.
Dr. Holt said she examined Hayward and found his pupils were "bilaterally pinpointed'' which she said was a sure sign of a drug overdose.
She also found a fresh "track'' or needle puncture on the inside of Hayward's elbow and a corresponding blood stain on his shirt.
"I believed he had suffered the effects of an opiate overdose and I believed he had injected himself,'' Dr. Holt said.
The Southampton Medical School educated doctor worked for almost an hour to stabilise Hayward who drifted in and out of consciousness.
She claimed she found a "fist sized'' package of brown powder in his pants which she gave to flight attendant Ian Morgan.
Under questioning by Hayward's lawyer Elizabeth Christopher, Dr. Holt admitted she could not precisely say where the plane was on its approach to Bermuda.
She said: "I was not looking out of the window nor did I have a map of Bermuda. Certainly when I found the package it was right near the end. The cabin crew had taken their seats and the landing gear was going down.'' Mr. Morgan told the court after he watched Dr. Holt remove the package, he accepted it and put it in his pocket.
The trial resumes today when Mr. Morgan will be cross-examined by Ms Christopher.
