Man jailed for hitting ex-girlfriend
Friday for hitting his ex-girlfriend during an incident that took place more than six years ago.
Vain Paynter, formerly of Sleepy Hollow Drive, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to doing grievous bodily harm to Sharon Swan on December 10, 1989 in Hamilton parish.
Police prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne said about 6 p.m., at the couple's home, the pair got into an argument.
Swan made an attempt to call Police but Paynter had pulled the phone out. When Swan attempted to leave Paynter grabbed her by her arm, slapped her and pulled her back into the house.
Paynter slapped the woman again causing her to fall to the floor.
Swan managed to escape but suffered a fractured nose, bruises and received four stiches to her upper lip.
Paynter told Police he assaulted Swan because she was armed.
He said that while she was on the floor "he went to kick her on the butt, but struck her in her face instead''.
Paynter's lawyer Mr. Archie Warner said the incident was an old domestic dispute and the injuries inflicted on the woman were not intentional.
Mr. Warner said the woman let Paynter back into the house -- despite the fact that she had a restraining order against him -- and things just got out of control.
Magistrate Mr. Edward King sentenced Paynter to six months in prison to run concurrent with any term Paynter is already serving.
