Man who knowingly infected woman with AIDS waits for sentence

Ashley Gilbert Dowling, who is the first person in Bermuda to admit he knowingly infected a woman with the AIDS virus will be sentenced next month.

The 31-year-old is expected to be sentenced in Supreme Court on February 1.

A social inquiry has been ordered although the reading of the facts will await sentencing.

Government recently amended the law to make it an offence to knowingly infect another person with a life-threatening sexually transmitted disease, including the AIDS virus.

At his arraignment in Supreme Court, Dowling, of Cedar Heights Lane, Warwick, pleaded guilty to the serious sexual assault committed between October 1, 1993 and July 25, 1994.

Mrs. Justice Wade remanded him in custody.
