Mood mixed on six-year work permit limits
Following last week's announcement by Government that a six-year limit on work permits will be instituted, The Royal Gazette took to the streets of Hamilton to gauge public reaction.
Selena Tucker said simply: "I agree with it.'' Matt Tubb thought that it was a good idea for both Bermudians and ex-pat workers, provided a framework was set up outlining exactly who qualified as a "key employee''.
One gentleman said that Government had said that if a company had been well behaved then key staff could be exempted from any restrictions.
He said -- provided there were no Bermudians for the job -- key employees could have their work permits extended anyway, so it would not matter if there was a limit.
Kim Simons said: "It doesn't apply to me as I am Bermudian.'' She added however, that included in the new regulations should be a stipulation that Bermudians must be trained for the job, otherwise another overseas worker would be employed as there would be no qualified Bermudians.
Vishan Singh echoed Ms Simons' sentiment, but added that Government must also ensure the commitment of Bermudians being trained in the new positions. He said he had first-hand experience with people being trained, and then leaving to pursue other jobs.
Thomas Moss said: "I think they will find that it won't be workable. It will be more trouble than its worth.'' Keith Warford thought it was a good idea and said: "From my point of view it would be a good idea to have six year permits rather than having to go through the extension process each time it needs to be renewed.'' Peter Fallon said quite simply that he was disappointed by what Government had said.
Many ex-pat workers appeared afraid of the question and did not wish to respond, while many Bermudians felt that it was an issue that did not affect them.
