The news comes the day after an independent opinion poll by Bermuda-based Total Marketing and Communications found 46 percent of Bermudians want a referendum on changes and 24 percent want a constitutional conference.

The petition, organised by the United Bermuda Party, reached the 8,356 signature mark yesterday and some forms have still to be collected.

United Bermuda Party leader Pamela Gordon said it showed her party was in tune with the desires of Bermudians.

The party is planning to hand in the petition to Overseas Territories Minister Baroness Scotland before the end of the month.
