Mother pushes Police probe into son's death
Almost three years after her son's lifeless body was pulled from the waters off North Shore Road, Linda Lottimore is on the verge of getting some answers about his death.
She said she was told by the investigating officers yesterday that an inquest into Delton Burchall's death would be held soon.
Meanwhile a Police spokesman said that as a result of the probe into the man's death, a file had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution's office.
He said he was unable to say exactly when the file was sent but noted that the thorough investigation into the matter had taken time.
Mr. Burchall was pulled from the water around 7.30 p.m. on October 18, 1997, after Police received a report from a member of the public who saw him floating near Robinson's Bay Park.
Foul play was not immediately ruled out in the 22-year-old, Deep Dale, Pembroke man's death. He was said to have had a gash on his forehead when he was pulled fully clothed from the water.
Ms Lottimore has waited for an answer to how her son died since then and after mounting frustration spoke to the investigating officers yesterday.
She later told The Royal Gazette : "I have a feeling I shook them up this morning.
"They gave me some insight about what has been going on. They said the inquest should be coming up soon but they didn't have a certain date.
"They said they had all the information they needed and had handed it to the Coroner.'' The former Whitney Institute pupil worked at Busby's Paint and Body Shop and had a one-year-old son from his girlfriend Laurel Steede -- who was expecting their second child.
Mother seeks answers to son's mystery death His son, Jeremiah, is now four and his daughter Dechole was born after he died and is now two years old.
In the days following the discovery of Mr. Burchall, allegations surfaced that he was seen near the old ZFB offices on North Shore Road with another man earlier that evening.
Ms Lottimore, at the time, said her son left home around 7 p.m. to go see Boulevard play soccer and added that she could not understand what he was doing there.
An autopsy was carried out on Mr. Burchall by US pathologist Valerie Rao and it was understood that he had drowned.
Police continued to treat the death as suspicious but had not launched a murder inquiry by October 23.
A month after the death, Mrs. Lottimore accused Police of not doing enough to uncover how her son died and noted they had kept his motorbike and clothing as evidence.
Those items are still in Police possession three years later.
Three months after Mr. Burchall was pulled from the water, Police said the investigation was still ongoing and witnesses were still being interviewed.
Mrs. Lottimore disclosed around that time that her son was apparently found trapped from the waist down under a rock before he was pulled from the water.
She said this was odd as he was a good swimmer.
And Ms Lottimore added yesterday that Police took her to where her son was pulled from the water for the first time since he was found dead.
"I went and saw where it happened for the first time. There was no way he could have fallen into the water. He would have been so far away from it and you have to go down steps before you're anywhere near the water.''
