MP searches for harmony on concerts' cut-off times

Concert promoters could be allowed to stage shows until 3 a.m. in a new Government review of events in public parks.

Youth and Sport Minister John Barritt promised action after Spanish Point Park hosted a huge concert to protest against the 1 a.m. cut-off time on Saturday.

The park had been double-booked -- with a wedding reception for 500 guests taking place in a nearby residence.

But Mr. Barritt, who was presented with a petition, said both events went off smoothly.

And he praised the "immaculate'' behaviour of hundreds of revellers at the concert organised by Dred and Baha Productions.

Barritt hints cut-off times for concerts may be 3 a.m.

The Minister said: "There will be a review of the cut-off times for these concerts in public parks.

"We limit each park to one a year out of respect for nearby residents. I am not saying that the shows will be allowed to go on until 3 a.m. and I am not even saying that there will be action this year.

"But it is possible that we will compromise and perhaps these concerts could finish at 2 a.m.

"What I can say for sure is that there will be a review and the fact that this concert was so well-organised did the protesters' cause no harm whatsoever.'' He said the concert packed up at 1 a.m. And Mr. Barritt found the park in spotless condition when he inspected it for litter the next morning. "We want to be fair to both sides,'' said Mr. Barritt, whose UBP Government changed the concert cut-off time from 3 a.m. to 1 a.m. last year.

"We recognise the right of young people to enjoy this kind of music. We also want to respect the wishes of nearby residents.'' Mr. Barritt is now taking views from residents and their local MPs before announcing any changes.
