MP to put forward gay sex bill
The Hon. John Stubbs said it was an "anachronism'' to outlaw sex between consenting male adults.
"I think honestly that homosexual activities between consenting adults in private, that's their business,'' Dr. Stubbs told The Royal Gazette yesterday.
"Not only is that my opinion, but that is the predominant opinion in the civilised world.'' Dr. Stubbs, who told of his plans in this week's United Bermuda Party caucus meeting, said he expected to have a bill prepared before the House of Assembly reconvened on February 4.
A free vote was anticipated, in which each MP could follow his or her conscience.
A similar private member's bill put forward by former UBP MP Mr. William Cox was defeated in 1971.
While many would welcome a change in the Criminal Code, Dr. Stubbs said he also expected "an awful lot of heat'' over the issue.
