This is 5.9 percent more than last year's figure for August -- but 8.6 percent lower than 1994's.

The figures were revealed yesterday by Bermuda Hotel Association president Stephen Barker.

He also disclosed projected levels -- based on bookings -- for September, October and November. These were: 58 percent, 54.5 and 34.6.

In 1995 the comparable figures for these three months were, respectively: 66.9 percent, 56.2 and 41.1.

The final 1995 occupancy levels for the same months were: 64.1 percent, 68 and 53.7.

Said Mr. Barker: "August and September occupancies were depressed in 1995 due to the repeated threat of hurricane activity.

"1996 results for these two key months are disappointing when compared to historical trends.'' Mr. Barker pointed out that for the eight month-period up to August 31, room nights sold totalled 492,916.

This was behind the "dismal'' pace of 1995 and 35,000 room nights short of the comparable 1994 figure, he added.
