The plan, put forward by the Millennium Committee, includes a fountain, an amphitheatre, a plaza, a pergola and a virtual reality electronic wall.

A curved seating area would go around the fountain featuring Grecian-style columns.

And the electronic wall would have touch-screens revealing Bermudian role models. It would go on the site of the toilets which would be relocated.

However, the plan met opposition from park users concerned that it was over-the-top and would destroy the calm of the city centre oasis.

Some had feared it would be a modern concrete nightmare built for the benefit of tourists.

Millennium Committee chairman Jay Bluck said it would add to the park's peaceful atmosphere and would create a pleasant entrance where people could meet.
