Park suggestion put forward
Park was attended by about 100 people, Parks director Mr. Bill Cook said yesterday.
Several ideas were put forward by the park's users, he said, including building tennis and basketball courts on the playing field or nearby Burchall's Hill.
But Mr. Cook said the playing field will remain under the control of Youth and Sport so any ideas will have to be put to that Ministry.
Park users also wanted better parking arrangements, more lighting and to get rid of the boat ramp, mostly used by jet skiers.
Mr. Cook said he did not have a problem with tidying up the parking arrangements and putting in more lampposts.
But he said he thought most residents would want the boat ramp to stay. He noted there were very few boat ramps on the Island and as jet skis were here to stay it wouldn't be fair to take it away.
But Mr. Cook said he was seeking further input on the subject.
He said those who attended the meeting were concerned about the noise pollution from jet skis.
Although jet ski and boat owners must obey signs to ride away from the swimming area, they can still be heard from the beach he said.
Mr. Cook said he presented plans at the meeting to close Old Road and prevent cars from "riding and parking all over the place''.
He also told residents the Junior Chamber charity organisation was currently raising funds to buy a wooden playground for the park.
Shelly Bay is the fifth park to be looked at so far in Government's scheme to improve the landscaping of Bermuda's parks and seek community input on how to better their amenities.
Mr. Cook said there were still some 67 parks to go. The next one is Mangrove Bay Park for which a public meeting will be held next Saturday.
