Pay-and-display gets the OK
But some Opposition MPs say the vouchers will confuse the public.
"The vouchers are very complicated. They are going to take some getting used to,'' said Mr, Ottiwell Simmons.
The House of Assembly approved a draft Hamilton Pay and Display Voucher Parking Ordinance 1995 shortly before MPs rose on Friday for their Easter break.
Mr. Simmons said the ordinance would not solve the traffic problem in Hamilton. "We have too much traffic, too many cars, too many large trucks, and too many motor cycles.'' He voiced concern about the speed some motorists travelled, pointing out there were a lot of tourists on the road. "Your life is in somebody else's hands.
Every vehicle is a lethal weapon.'' Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul, however, who introduced the draft ordinance, said double parking was one of the most serious traffic problems in Hamilton. He said the Corporation of Hamilton did its best to come up with a simple system.
And he pointed out voucher systems were already in place in Britain, in such places as Bath and Brighton, and also in Jersey. "I can't believe Bermudians are less intelligent than people in Bath, Brighton or Jersey.'' Dr. Saul said vouchers were available at shops.
