PLP focus on youth employment

of their own destinies during a youth rally at Warwick's PHC Stadium.

About 50 people turned out to hear several PLP politicians discuss the future of Bermudians in the work force and the need for the youth to use their vote for self-empowerment.

Southampton East MP Reginald Burrows emphasised the PLP's commitment to providing Bermudians with a solid place in the work force.

He stated: "We want to make sure when we send our students overseas to qualify for a job, a job will be waiting for them.

"The PLP wants to make sure than no one will shut the doors in their faces ... we want to make sure Bermudians are in the forefront of all our developmental plans,'' he added.

And Southampton East MP Stanley Lowe encouraged youth to exercise their voting privileges.

"The vote was not given to us on a silver platter. We have a responsibility to get out there and vote,'' said Mr. Lowe.

"People like Roosevelt Brown and Lois Browne-Evans have given us a legacy, don't be afraid to talk about supporting the PLP.'' Shadow Finance Minister Eugene Cox, MP for Sandys North, urged students to become skilled in professional development and administrative skills to give them an edge in the work force.

"Often we claim we need overseas workers. I'm not disputing that,'' he said.

"But if Bermudians make up 75 to 85 percent of the work force, then I want to see 75 to 85 percent in top jobs, middle jobs, and jobs at the lower end.'' Parliamentary candidate Michael Scott focussed on how youth seemed distrustful of the political process. He said the PLP was prepared to unveil a comprehensive youth programme to address problems during the transition from youth to adulthood.
