PLP would review Police spending
wins the next election, Opposition Leader Jennifer Smith said yesterday.
But she stopped short of promising any extra cash for the service following a meeting with senior officers at Police Headquarters yesterday.
The meeting, also attended by Shadow Public Safety Minister Alex Scott, was set up at the invitation of Acting Commissioner Jean Jacques Lemay to keep politicians informed of Police concerns.
Ms Smith said the talks were informative and a wide range of issues had been discussed.
"Senior Police officers have taken time to brief us on various aspects of the Police Service so that we can be better informed,'' she said.
"There weren't any new problems raised that we weren't aware of. We were aware of the deplorable state of the working conditions and the increased complexity of the fight against crime. We were aware of these things and today we talked about creatively working out these problems.
"The Police can benefit from effective funding for training and drug enforcement.
"But I cannot say there would be any extra funding. That's something we will have to look at. It might mean, if we decide to increase the number of motorbikes, we would put less money into patrol cars. It's a question of how the money is used.'' Still fighting the war on drugs, Police have seized more than 24 grams of various substances and made 15 arrests.
Since its reactivation in October, the Police Community Safety Task Force has seized some 17 grams of cannabis, 7.15 grams of crack cocaine and 0.073 grams of heroin. There were also six incidents in which drugs were found and seized, but the Task Force had no suspects.
Thirteen other arrests were made for non-drug related offences.
