Police probe road accidents

Just after 5.15 p.m. officers went to Port Royal Golf Course where a golf cart driven by two female students had tipped over on the cart path.

The golf cart had been heading east when the rider attempted to apply the brakes but control of the vehicle was lost and it hit a pothole and overturned.

One girl received road rash to her left buttock while the other had abrasions to both arms and her face.

The other accident took place on Harrington Sound Road, Smith's Parish, and involved a 26-year-old Smith's man.

A Police spokeswoman said the man was riding his motorcycle east when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with an offside pole.

He suffered a fractured left arm and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was later detained on suspicion of impaired driving.

MAN FINED $1,500 FOR CANNABIS CTS Man fined $1,500 for cannabis A 19-year-old Devonshire man was fined $1,500 and given a three month suspended prison sentence in Magistrates' Court for possessing nearly one ounce of cannabis.

Devarious Dent, of Crown Hill Lane, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the offence that occurred on January 9, 1997.

Prosecutor Sgt. Anthony Mouchette said narcotics officers saw Dent seated on a motorcycle. They approached and searched him and found a plastic bag in his left front pants pocket. He told Police "weed'' was contained in the bag.

At Hamilton Police Station they also found a paper twist containing plant material in his top right jacket pocket.

The plant material was found to be 24.76 grams of cannabis.

Dent told Police that he purchased the drugs in St. George's for $500 and they were for his personal use.

Magistrate Edward King fined Dent $1,500 for possessing the drugs and imposed a three month prison sentence suspended for two years.

MONEY STOLEN FROM MAN'S WALLET CTS Money stolen from man's wallet A 61-year-old Pembroke man reported the theft of some cash from his wallet to Police on Wednesday morning.

A Police spokeswoman said the Crisson Avenue resident was told by his son that he had a visitor at the door to see him.

He met and talked to the visitor, a female acquaintance, who asked him for some money for beer which he supplied from his pants pocket As she left, she told the man's son that his father's wallet was on the couch.

Later when he checked the wallet the complainant discovered some cash was missing.

A description was supplied to Police and investigations are continuing.

US AIRWAYS TICKET OFFICE CLOSES FLY US Airways ticket office closes The US Airways ticket office in the City of Hamilton closed as of yesterday.

British Airways spokeswoman Sallie Singleton said the ticket office was located at the British Airways office at 89 Front Street. British Airways has held a financial stake in US Airways for a number of years, but this recently came into question after BA entered talks about an alliance with US Airways' rival, American Airlines.

SANDYS MAN'S LAWM FURNITURE STOLEN CRM Sandys man's lawn furniture stolen A Sandys Parish man returned home on Wednesday to find his lawn furniture missing, a Police spokeswoman reported yesterday.

The 34-year-old Somerset Road resident told Police he returned home from work just after midnight and noticed the furniture -- a white plastic table with four metal chairs covered with pastel cushions -- was missing from his porch.

Investigating officers believe there is a connection between this theft and a similar one from a residence at 'Tween the Walls, Sandys.

SOCIETY FOR BLIND SEEKS VOLUNTEERS CLB FNR Society for Blind seeks volunteers Volunteers are urgently needed to help man summer sales stands and help raise funds for a charity for the blind.

Nigel Stewart of the Bermuda Society for the Blind said currently the charity ran one stall on Thursdays on Front Street, but wanted to increase that number during the cruise ship season.

"We need as many people as possible, because we would like to extend the number of days we run stalls if we can,'' he said.

GENERAL TYRES HAS STOCK STOLEN CTS General Tyres has stock stolen The Police are probing the theft of a pair of car tyres worth a total of $250.

The owner of General Tyres, North Shore Road, Devonshire reported that someone broke into the premises Tuesday night and stole the two Yokohama tyres.
