Police Week: A chance for everyone to learn more
week as part of Police Week celebrations. Residents and visitors are invited to attend the ceremonies which continue through October 25. "Police week is an opportunity for the community and the Police force to share in a number of activities,'' explained Deputy Commissioner, Jean Jacques Lemay. "It's a tradition in many countries to set aside a week in the year which allows Police to open their doors to the public and to make the community aware of its activities and programmes in place. "Because of our commitment to the community and to policing, it's even more important for us to develop a partnership with the community we serve and Police Week is a vehicle through which we can develop that with the community.'' This year's theme, `The safety and security of the community, together we can make a difference', sees community members and officers working together to solve the Island's problems. "There are some projects where we can work together to achieve safe streets, safe homes and a safe community for the people of Bermuda and that is one of them,'' added Mr. Lemay. Police Week officially began yesterday with a Thanksgiving service at the Cathedral in Hamilton. The church service was followed by a brunch at the Police Recreation Club. "Throughout the week, we will be holding a number of activities designed to involve children. We held a contest for students between the ages of 11 and 14 where they were asked to write an essay on the topic `If I was the Commissioner of Police, what would I do?'. The winner will be made Commissioner of Police for one day while runners up will spend the day working in either the Eastern, Western or Central divisional offices. "We're asking them to give us ideas on what they perceive to be the problem in Bermuda and, if they had the opportunity to make decisions, what would they do.'' The essays, he said, were evaluated be a committee of local educators and Police officers. Prizes will also be given to the winners of a colouring contest launched by the Force for children between the ages of 5 and 10. "Open Houses are also planned for the Eastern, Central and Western Divisions (October 20, 21 and 22 respectively) to which the public is invited to come and talk to officers,'' added Mr. Lemay. "It's a great opportunity for us to talk to the public and for them to ask any questions they might have and find out more about the Service.''
