Premier warned by NLP: `Practice what you preach'
practice what they preach.
Noting Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan's request for business leaders to keep their costs down to allow Bermuda to remain competitive, NLP leader Mr.
Gilbert Darrell MP said: "His suggestion to the private sector would carry some weight if he would get his own house in order.'' "The size and cost of the Bermuda Government is a major threat to Bermuda's economic well-being,'' he said, adding that Government workers received a six percent pay increase last year and this year while the private sector and non-unionised workers are faced with "short work weeks, wage freezes and unemployment.'' Mr. Darrell also said Government must realise that it could no longer increase head taxes, hotel taxes, duty and service fees "that have been a major stake through the heart of profitability of our fragile tourism industry.'' He said Government must be actively seen to be setting an example in correcting "its own inefficiencies and redundancies.
"It also must streamline its size and services to what Bermuda can afford.
"The private sector is partly responsible for this problem but the Government and the unions must accept the lion's share of this reality.'' MR. GILBERT DARRELL.
