Radio show host subject of threatening calls

Radio talk show host Linda DaCosta has received threats from a listener angered by her programme, an MP has claimed.

Opposition backbencher Ottiwell Simmons said the ZBM presenter had been warned her job was on the line -- because her programme was too political.

"Whoever is doing this should cease and desist,'' Mr. Simmons told the House of Assembly on Friday.

Yesterday ZBM sources said Ms DaCosta had apparently been threatened off-the-air by a "United Bermuda Party type''.

A complaint had now been made to Bermuda Broadcasting Company management.

Ms DaCosta, who hosts a daily 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. show on ZBM 1340, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Mr. Simmons told The Royal Gazette he had not spoken to Ms DaCosta.

"I only found out about what was happening because she told her listeners,'' he said.

In the House of Assembly, Mr. Simmons said the complaints of harassment raised serious freedom of speech issues.

Government MPs wanted to know who was responsible for the harassment. But Mr.

Simmons could not say, although he stressed: "It is not any member of the Legislature.'' Mr. Simmons said he made notes of what the listener had reportedly told Ms DaCosta.

These included:"Your programme is too political and if you don't break it down and change your format you may have to find another job ... You bought time by going public and we will get you Linda.'' Mr. Simmons said Ms DaCosta's show was very popular.

"People enjoy these shows. The show has been doing some good. I think shows are good, healthy and should be encouraged.'' He added: "This House should make a statement in support of freedom of speech and we will condemn anyone who tries to deny us this freedom.'' Premier Pamela Gordon told MPs: "If Ms DaCosta was aware of who this person is she should report the matter to the Police. I feel that there is this recourse.''
