The residents had boxes in the Old Town post office allowing them to collect mail 24 hours a day.

But since postal operations were switched to Ordnance Island due to the renovations, they can only get access to their mail during office hours.

Residents who work in Hamilton have told The Royal Gazette that the changes mean they have great difficulty getting their mail.

The switch was made to allow essential repairs to be carried out to the Post Office roof.

But one resident, who asked not to be named, said: "First of all we were not told that the Post Office was going to be moving.

"They came in one day and just moved everything. The way I found out was that when I went down to get my mail, there was a big sign up saying they had moved.

"It is a real inconvenience now because I can only pick up my mail during the regular Post Office working hours between 8 and 5 p.m..

"I work in Hamilton and had been collecting my mail in the evenings. The change has meant that I now collect my mail only once a week. I have had no communication from the Post Office and was never given any option. I just learned that some people asked to have their mail delivered, but I did not even know that was an option.'' The change was made to carry out essential repairs to the Post Office roof which should be complete in March.

Postmaster General Cleveland Critchlow said he was not aware of any complaints from customers.

He said: "What are we to do? We have set up mail boxes but they are not secure.

"We have set up boxes at Ordnance Island, but after 5 p.m. they cannot have access to them because they are not secure.''
