Roberts faces Supreme Court trial for drugs trafficking
Drugs suspect Kirk Roberts is to face a Supreme Court trial on charges of possessing more than $100,000 worth of cannabis intended for supply.
The 37-year-old will also answer charges that he smuggled the anti-depressant lorenzapam to Barbara Roberts while she was in Police custody during an Appeals Court hearing.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis freed the accused on bail and ordered him to return to Magistrates Court on January 10.
But Roberts, of West Side Road, Sandys, cannot be tried in the lower court because the charges are so serious.
He was not required to plead to the charges when he appeared before Mr.
Francis yesterday.
Crown Counsel Leighton Rochester, prosecuting, told the court Roberts was charged with possessing 2,090.4 grammes of cannabis with a Bermuda street value of around $104,500.
Roberts, a self-employed shipwright, was charged with possession of the drugs intended for supply. He was also charged with handling the drugs between an unknown date and September 19.
And it was further alleged that Roberts possessed drug equipment including 920 pay-type envelopes, 72 zip-lock bags, two pieces of cellophane plastic tape, carbon paper wrappings, a scale and a Whirlpool freezer.
Mr. Francis said the charges of smuggling lorenzapam to Barbara Roberts contravened both the Prisons Act and the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Roberts, who has instructed defence lawyer Julian Hall, was represented in court by Kim Wilson.
He did not speak throughout his hearing and stood motionless while the chrages were read to him.
Mr. Francis granted him $5,000 bail with a like surety but ordered Roberts to surrender all travel documents and report to Somerset Police Station every Monday and Friday.
