A 34-strong group of athletes from Bermuda Special Olympics, including coaches, family and friends flew off yesterday for the anniversary.

It was on July 20, 1968 the opening ceremonies for the first International Special Olympic Games took place in Chicago and 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada took part in athletics and swimming events.

Today there are 22 Olympic-type sports and 25,000 local Special Olympics programmes in 73 countries.
