SCHOOL MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Testing * First Government to publish the results of the TerraNova test.
* More desired learning outcomes are measured in schools.
* All parents have the opportunity to discuss their child's test results with their school.
Accountability * All schools now have school improvement plans that set out the school's objectives each year with targets in place for achievement.
* New system of teacher and principal appraisals.
* Teachers must now write and submit detailed plans and principals must spend time in classrooms, so that they can see for themselves how those lessons are delivered.
* Curriculum Management Audit review and implementation of recommendations outstanding from 1996 report.
Report Card * Committee set up to review and re-design the report cards used at all levels of the system.
Teachers * In 2000, Government recruited in Jamaica and the UK. In 2001, it is recruiting in the UK and in the US.
* A new task force set up to address the issue of teacher morale.
Attendance * Attendance unit set up in September 1999. Attendance figures improved in the first term of this school year at every level, compared to the first term of the last school year.
Fire and safety * Survey of school security last year - and a budget of $500,000 set aside to take forward work identified as needed by the survey.
PRIMARY LEVEL Literacy and Numeracy * All primary teachers have Literacy Place and Math Advantage text books and have been trained in how to deliver them.
* Reading Recovery continues to provide for Primary 2 students.
* Working on a new literacy strategy.
Curriculum * New primary curriculum to be introduced in September of this year.
School improvement programme * Focused support for five primary schools that have performed below the average for a number of years - will raise student achievement and create a climate of excellence.
Technology * Computers installed in every primary one, two and three classroom.
* All primary teachers will have IT training as part of Literacy Place.
Class sizes * Now have classes of 15 or fewer in all primary one and two classes.
* Introducing reduced primary three class size in September 2001.
MIDDLE LEVEL * Following an independent report on middle school standards, Government has designed a "battle plan'' to raise achievement. A report is expected soon.
* New curriculum is already in place.
* Computer labs installed in Sandys and Dellwood.
SENIOR LEVEL International standards * Government said it recognised the need to ensure that students received a certificate on graduation that is readily acceptable in institutions of further education both here and overseas, and that makes clear what competencies the students have achieved.
* A committee has been set up to examine certification and accreditation available overseas and to think creatively about the best solution for Bermuda's graduates.
Curriculum * New curriculum is already in place.
School buildings * Investment in school buildings at CedarBridge Academy and Berkeley Institute.
