Scott says new Post Office is on the way

"It should be known we are actively developing and pursuing the development of a Paget post office,'' said Minister of Works and Engineering Alex Scott.

planned.

"It should be known we are actively developing and pursuing the development of a Paget post office,'' said Minister of Works and Engineering Alex Scott.

"It has not been put on the back burner. It is receiving as much priority if not more with this Government than the previous one.'' Earlier this week Opposition members questioned whether Government was still committed to the proposal as no money had been earmarked for the project in the 1999 budget.

But Mr. Scott denied the claims.

"We do have money in the budget for the Paget post office. However, as one of the candidates has said, there are two options for the Paget post office,'' he said.

"One site is in between the supermarket and Trimingham's which was too small for a full service post office -- that was only space enough for post boxes.'' As a result of this, Mr. Scott said the post boxes would be at a separate location from the main Post Office which could remain at the current site.

But he said that was not considered to be feasible.

A second and more favourable choice was to locate the post office on Bermuda College property, he continued.

"The Bermuda College said yes to it, but they also wish to take the opportunity to put in a nursery,'' Mr. Scott explained.

"We've come to the point where it looks as if the decision will be for a post office at the Bermuda College with us beginning the development and leaving a shell underneath for the nursery.

"The monies that exists in Works and Engineering are for the beginning of the plans and the starting of the project.

"Breaking of ground depends on Planning and other points of administration.''
