Senator's son jailed
four-and-a-half-year prison term for importing $35,000 worth of cocaine.
Kirkland Butterfield, 27, of West Park Lane, Pembroke pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to importing 236 grams of the drug on August 12, 1996.
A second charge of possession with intent to supply was dropped.
Prosecutor Sgt. Anthony Mouchette said Airport Customs officers found the drugs in a cologne bottle in Butterfield's luggage when he returned to the Island.
He said 236 grams of cocaine was enough to produce 280 half-gram wraps, priced at $125 each on the street.
He added that if all of the wraps had been sold, the total value would have been $35,000.
Magistrate Edward King said: "I cannot give you a discount for your guilty plea because you were clearly caught with your hand stuck in the proverbial cookie jar. The penalty must reflect the gravity of the crime.''
