Spearfishing verdict on hold

Kevin Carter, 20, Scott Gibbons, 26, Marty Lema, 34, and Glenn Smith, 24, all of Hamilton Parish, yesterday appeared in Magistrates' Court on charges of spearfishing.

The four all pleaded guilty taking fish by spearfishing, and taking a protected parrot fish on October 28.

Carter also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of taking lobsters via spearfishing.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Harbour Radio alerted Marine Police that a boat that was spearfishing off Nonsuch Island.

Marine Police found the four men on board a 12-foot white boat after they had just emerged from the water.

Sgt. Taylor said a Police search revealed three lobsters and 25 fish, of which 15 were parrot fish.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis told the foursome that "these are very serious offences'' and adjourned the matter so he could seek advice from the Crown on an appropriate sentence.

The maximum sentence the four men face on each charge is a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a year in prison.

Mr. Francis adjourned the case until March 14 and granted each man bail in the sum of $500.

MAN REQUESTS SUPREME COURT TRIAL CTS Man requests Supreme Court trial A 30-year-old Sandys Parish man yesterday elected to be tried in the Supreme Court for allegedly supplying drugs.

Gladstone Headlam, of Railway Trail, was charged in Magistrates' Court with supplying an undisclosed amount of cannabis and knowingly handling it with intent on April of last year.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis adjourned the matter until March 14 and granted Headlam, who is represented by lawyer Richard Hector, bail in the sum of $500.
