Speech debate is set to continue
all day today.
Last Friday, Government MPs spoke for 245 minutes about the Speech from the Throne, and Opposition MPs spoke for 296 minutes, Government Whip Mr. John Barritt told The Royal Gazette .
With ten United Bermuda Party and Progressive Labour Party MPs still to speak, he expected another full day of debate today.
Government has opposed sitting late into the evening to debate the Throne Speech, but Mr. Barritt rejected an Opposition charge that the lack of urgency showed that the UBP lacked a legislative programme.
"There is legislation on the Order Paper, but I think Government's priority at this time has been to debate the Throne Speech thoroughly,'' he said. "The PLP has taken the same approach.'' Also today, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan is expected to report to the House on this week's trip to Washington and Norfolk which dashed lingering hopes of prolonging US Navy involvement in the operation of the Civil Air Terminal.
