Sports world mourns `spirit of the team'
The sporting world suffered a tragic loss with the untimely death of Police officer Robin Hollinsid.
A keen soccer, rugby and cricket player, Det. Con. Hollinsid was surely one to always be in on the action, giving his all for the sake of the team.
As a midfielder for Prospect, of the Bermuda Football Association's First Division, the 31-year-old was, literally, a godsend to coach David Furbert.
Not only was he a tireless worker in the middle of the park, but also served as the unofficial chief cheerleader and team psychologist.
"Obviously this is a very grief-stricken moment...it's unbelievable right now,'' said Prospect coach David Furbert, who reflected on the jovial and always upbeat mood of the player, who was also his godson.
"It was just after the last game against St. George's that I had expressed the view that Robin was the spirit of the team, so obviously this has everyone in really deep shock.'' Mr. Furbert previously coached Det. Con. Hollinsid during the latter's tenure in the junior ranks at Devonshire Colts.
Then until the time of his unfortunate passing, the coach noted the kind, helpful demeanour exhibited by the man.
"Like I said, he was the spirit of the team,'' continued Mr. Furbert. "If there was anyone who needed cheering up ... Robin was the person to do it.
"No matter where we were he was the one who gave us a good laugh when we needed one, and on the pitch he gave us everything he had.'' The death of the Policeman resulted in the cancellation of yesterday's First Division soccer match between Prospect and Paget at White Hill Field, while a silent tribute was observed at National Sports Club, where Det. Con. Hollinsid often turned out for Police as a speedy winger.
He also dabbled at cricket during the summer months, playing in the Commercial League.
