St. George's Beach Club wins licence
public from its beach club at Achilles Bay.
The restaurant, managed by the Wharf Tavern, previously held a licence allowing it to sell liquor and food to club members only.
The main objector was Mr. Kenny Bascome, who runs nearby Tobacco Bay beach house, which sells food and soft drinks but not liquor.
Coot Pond Road residents also objected, citing noise pollution and heavy traffic caused by restaurant customers. They were also concerned the customers might wander onto the beach or roadside to drink.
Liquor Licensing Authority chairman the Wor. Will Francis said the area was already frequented by tourists and residents.
"It is clear this situation will continue whether or not a licence is granted,'' Mr. Francis said.
He said the Authority did not think the restaurant being open to the public would result in a significant increase in traffic or disturbance in the neighbourhood.
Mr. Bascome vowed to fight on, saying: "This is not the end of it.''
