Stole liquor for cocaine habit
worth of liquor to finance his cocaine habit was given a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years in Magistrates' Court this week.
Magistrate the Wor. Edward King sentenced Howard Burgess, 36, of Dock Hill, Devonshire after reading a social inquiry report on his drug habit.
On July 2, Burgess helped staff at Cala's Kitchen on Victoria Street pack away liquor left over from cruise. He later returned to the restaurant through a rear door and stole 17 bottles of liquor worth $431.91 which he sold on Court Street for six rocks of cocaine.
After smoking the cocaine, he developed a craving for more and returned to the restaurant. He stole an additional 15 bottles worth $405.10 which he sold for more drugs.
Burgess, who pleaded guilty to both charges, offered to reimburse the restaurant. Only one unopened bottle worth $22 was recovered, said Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale.

Raymond Spence, of Rambling Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to both charges in Magistrates' Court this week.
Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Spence began to walk away as plain-clothes Police officers approached him on Court Street on November 16, last year.
When the officers confronted Spence, he took a homemade glass pipe out of his pants pocket. The pipe contained a dark residue which later tested positively as cocaine.
Earlier that year, on September 28, Spence was stopped while driving a motorcycle without a driver's licence on Union Street in Pembroke.
Spence was fined $200 and $100 respectively for the offences.
