11th Annual Education Conference of the Bermuda Union of Teachers.

Mr. Paul Keens-Douglas of Trinidad has written six books and produced several radio and television storytelling series.

As well as speaking at the conference banquet at Sonesta Beach Hotel tonight, Mr. Keens-Douglas is to conduct an all-day workshop tomorrow dealing with communications.

"There's more to it than the three R's'' is the theme of this year's conference.

Sen. Milton Scott, union organiser for the BUT, said that in addition to the academic subjects many people thought of first, there was "the hidden curriculum'' that helped to get many students interested and kept them that way.

These included extracurricular activities, skits, and other things that made learning enjoyable, Sen. Scott said. This year, there was also emphasis on "thematic teaching,'' he said.

Dr. Linda Ann Creque, Commissioner of Education for the Virgin Islands, is to be a guest presenter at the conference tomorrow.

"Trends in Education and Prescriptions for the Future,'' will be the title of her workshop.

Dr. Creque has more than 30 years experience as an educator and has written numerous publications.

While in Bermuda, she is to meet with Education Ministry officials. Because a central location was unavailable, this year's conference is to be held at several venues around the Island.
