Students' company a success
students a name in the young business industry.
Unity Enterprises, is a Young Enterprise Company, which is an organisation that helps students form companies and make products, and it is comprised of and run by the students at Warwick Academy.
They have received several awards which recognise their ability to operate a business.
Unity Enterprises was the winner of the National Competition for the Bermuda Young Enterprise final competition, the Institute of directors Bermuda Independent centre Award for the best stand in the Young Enterprise trade fair, and a second prize for the most innovative product.
The students make their own products which are 100 percent pure bees wax, dripless candles in an array of colours and since inception the business has been profitable.
For the past few weeks the company has been selling their goods at Harbour Night on Front Street and supplying Trimingham's and Bermuda Blue with bulk orders.
Link teacher and guidance counsellor at Warwick Academy Mrs. Christine Stubbs said the company imports their own materials and they deal with the costs of customs and duty themselves.
"The students have their own bank accounts and they have shareholders.
Students themselves are the directors of the company,'' she said.
She added: "The product has been extremely popular because it is a nicely made quality product, it doesn't have a nasty smell like some of the other candles.'' When asked why the company had done so well managing director sixteen-year-old Joshua Samuels said people liked the product and they were impressed with the fact that the business was run by students.
Finance director young Terjuan Lister said students had to "buy materials, calculate costs and pay suppliers by draft. We also have to make sure the shareholders get enough dividend and salaries are allocated properly.''
