Three to appear in court
heist, Police revealed yesterday.
And three suspects in the armed robbery of the Bank of Butterfield in Somerset -- in which it is understood more than $50,000 was stolen -- are expected to appear in court this morning to be charged.
The first suspect, a 24-year-old Somerset man, was nabbed in the water off Sound View Road after a woman called Police to say she had seen a man climbing out of the water.
The man was taken into custody after he tried to swim away but eventually returned to land.
The second suspect, a 20-year-old Somerset man, was caught elsewhere in Somerset after a joint effort by the Police's Emergency Response Team, Marine Unit, Cycle Squad, K-9 Section and uniformed and plain clothed officers.
A third suspect, a 30-year-old Devonshire man was also apprehended on Tuesday in the City of Hamilton just after rush hour.
Police have confirmed that several items, including a handgun had been recovered during their investigation.
However they have refused to reveal how much money was stolen or if some or all of it was recovered.
Three security guards were hurt when two masked bandits entered a side entrance of the bank branch at about 10.15 a.m. -- just as bank security officers were making a cash delivery.
The masked men, at least one of whom was armed with a gun, assaulted and incapacitated the two security guards making the delivery plus a third guard who was on duty at the bank.
The bandits did not discharge their guns, but used them to pistol whip the security guards before leaving with an undisclosed amount of money.
The men were forced to flee on foot, when their get-away bike would not start.
They fled through the bank's parking lot and onto East Shore Road.
Due to an editing error, yesterday's story reported that Police said that all the money stolen in the robbery has been recovered. Police have made no comment on whether or not any of the money has been found.
