Government is widening the road and temporary traffic lights have been installed to improve the flow of traffic, Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said.
The lights will give priority to eastbound traffic in the morning rush hour and to westbound traffic in the evening.
"The success of the system, however, requires that motorist strictly obey the traffic signals,'' he said. "The most common infringement is following other vehicles through when the lights are clearly displaying red.
"We are asking motorists to drive with caution in the vicinity of the road works and to be patient in view of the inevitable delays.'' P.c. Venning warned that Police would be monitoring the area.
