publicised, has shown again he's a harsh critic.

Judge Tumim recently put a prison, housing some of Britain's most dangerous inmates, in his sights.

He said London gangsters controlled areas of Worcestershire's Long Larton jail almost as if they were running it. Drug taking was also rife.

His criticism followed a week-long visit to the high-security prison by inspectors.

The UK Government immediately pledged to get to the root of the problems.

Home Secretary Mr. Kenneth Clarke said several initiatives were already underway.

Recently Judge Tumim, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons in England and Wales, blasted the prison service throughout Britain.

He told of cramped, dirty cells, with "ridiculous'' meal times.

Bermuda's Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness said he welcomed Judge Tumim's critical approach.

He said Bermuda would benefit from constructive, fearless criticism.

"My impression is that he is a man who speaks his mind, and that is to be welcomed,'' added Mr. Edness.

Judge Tumim's report on Bermuda's criminal justice system will probably be discussed by Cabinet after Christmas.

Copies of it are already in the hands of the Bermudian members of the Criminal Justice Review team.
