The Royal Gazette learned the diplomat used his privilege of immunity after being stopped by Police early last week.
The United States Consulate refused to confirm or deny the claim, as did Police and Deputy Governor Tim Gurney.
A source said: "A US immigration officer was stopped for driving offences but claimed Diplomatic Immunity. We can't ever remember it happening before on the Island.'' Diplomats can claim immunity to arrest or Police charges, no matter how serious the crime.
For very serious crimes, including murder, the host Government can ask the diplomat involved to leave the country, but charges would still not be brought.
