Wade hands over petition against hiring of top British Policemen

Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade met for half an hour yesterday with the British Cabinet Minister responsible for Bermuda, presenting him with a Bermuda petition opposing the overseas hiring of the Island's two top Police officers.

Government's new Green Paper on Independence was also discussed during the meeting with Foreign & Commonwealth Office Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Mr. Tony Baldry, said Mr. Wade.

Mr. Wade said he handed Mr. Baldry a 6,000-name petition calling on Government and the Governor to "review and rescind'' the decision to hire Bermuda's Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner from England. But, after the meeting, he believed the appointments would go ahead. "He felt that he had to defer to the `man on the spot,' i.e. Governor Lord Waddington,'' said Mr.

Wade, who was accompanied by Shadow Finance Minister Mr. Eugene Cox.

But Mr. Baldry also made it clear that if either the Government or the Public Service Commission had opposed the overseas hiring, "it would not have happened,'' Mr. Wade said.

Mr. Baldry sent out a statement yesterday after consulting with the Governor, a Foreign Office spokesman said. "The decision has been taken by the Governor in close consultation with the Government of Bermuda and the Public Service Commission, both of whom supported the decision. The appointments were made in total accordance with the Constitution of Bermuda.'' Mr. Wade also said Mr. Baldry differed with some of what was said in Government's recently-tabled discussion paper on Independence. But he wanted to talk about that only after he returned to the Island on Saturday.
